Fraser Adult Community Education works with community groups for change
This is Fraser High School’s Adult Community Education. It’s not a high school as you know it.
Fraser Adult Community Education (ACE) is a Hamilton provider doing things differently - working with community groups to help students achieve amazing outcomes.
What makes it unique is that it doesn’t just run courses in a one-size fits all approach – it works with communities to identify and deliver training that is needed and wanted.
That community vibe sets it apart from more traditional education providers, offering a supportive environment for lifelong learning, fostering personal growth and community connection through education.
Fraser ACE is based out of Fraser High School, and works with individuals and organisations in Hamilton and surrounding rural Waikato communities.
It appreciates that not everyone may have had a great experience at school the first time around – but it also knows that education changes lives, and wants to give people another chance to learn new skills in a supportive and vibrant environment.
Fraser ACE prides itself on bringing fun, practical learning to the table. It offers a rich range of courses that cater to all interests and skill levels, with more than 60 options every term. From arts and crafts to technology and personal development, there’s something for everyone.
All of its programmes are delivered by experienced tutors committed to seeing students succeed. The courses incorporate elements of numeracy, literacy and social wellbeing to ensure learners not only acquire new skills, but develop essential life skills for personal growth.
There are two main focuses of the programmes – career and professional development, and personal enrichment.
The career courses provide the chance to gain practical business skills in areas such as accounting, AI, computing and entrepreneurship, while the personal enrichment programme lets you explore your passions with classes in the likes of painting, cooking, photography and languages.
Other classes include self-defence, and cultural enrichment. There are many other practical skills courses on offer too – like those for would-be baristas and beekeepers.
Or you can learn to sew, decorate cakes or grow a garden. Or learn the guitar or how to quit smoking.
And for those with busy schedules, Fraser ACE can offer one day courses, though the programmes more typically run for eight weeks over evenings and weekends, and are targeted at those aged 16 and over. Some younger learners will be considered on a case by case basis.
Some of the community groups Fraser ACE woks with include Ngā Arts in Ngāruawāhia, Friendship House in Huntly, Western and Glenview Community Centres and the Hamilton Woodturners Association.
These partnerships help bring learning opportunities into the heart of Hamilton and surrounding rural communities.
For example, at the Hamilton Woodturners Association, Fraser ACE offers courses for those keen on the art of woodturning. They are available for all skill levels, from beginners exploring the craft to experienced woodturners honing their technique.
And in partnership with various community centres, Fraser ACE offers courses related to areas such as arts and crafts, lifestyle and wellbeing, and practical skills such as sewing and computing.
Education is a lifelong adventure. Fraser ACE is there for anyone looking to grow – whether that’s gaining confidence, learning a new skill, getting ahead in your career or giving learning another go after a not-so-great experience. You’ll also likely make some new friends and community connections.
