By Zoila Palma: As part of the AMEXCID-funded initiative “Diagnosis of the Beekeeping Subsector and Building Capacities for New and Existing Beekeepers in Belize,” Extension Officers Jesse Madrid and Miguel Huertas participated in a week-long workshop in Campeche, Mexico, from April 21–25.
The event marked the second phase of an international cooperation project aimed at strengthening Belize’s apiculture sector. Coordinated with Mexico’s Secretaría de Agricultura, the program included hands-on site visits to certified apiaries and honey-processing facilities known for Good Beekeeping Practices.
They toured queen bee breeding centers in Hopelchén and Sabancuy, visited apiaries in Tinún, and observed honey harvesting, packaging, and commercialization techniques.
They also explored certified honey processors “Miel y Cera de Campeche” and “Apicultores de Champotón SPR de RI” to gain insights into export-ready practices.
The mission culminated in a forum on April 24 in Champotón, where Madrid presented on the current state of Belize’s honey industry, followed by Huertas outlining strategic actions for its development.
Their participation helped strengthen Belize-Mexico agricultural ties and laid the groundwork for continued technical collaboration.
