Beekeeping revolution happening on Calgary’s outskirts
Alberta is the biggest producer of honey in Canada and home to 39 per cent of the country’s honeybee colonies, according to a 2024 Government of Alberta study. Yet over one-third of Alberta’s bee colonies did not survive the 2023-24 winter and the situation is getting worse.
Enter Calgary-area entrepreneur Herman Van Reekum. He’s the founder and CEO of Beekeeping Innovations Ltd. and is weaving together beekeeping tradition and new technology to tackle the problem.
Van Reekum has created the Bee Cube — a portable 2.4-by-3.7-metre shed with sensors that houses up to 20 bee hives in a temperature-controlled environment, protecting the bees against harsh weather and honey-loving predators.
He’s hoping better shelter and new propagation methods can generate healthier bees and more benefits for Alberta’s agricultural industry.
That’s especially important because beekeepers face overwintering losses each year.

“Maybe 20 years ago, what would have been considered an acceptable loss was around 15 per cent,” says Connie Phillips, executive director of the Alberta Beekeepers Commission.
“Now, if somebody loses 30 per cent, they think they’re doing OK. This year the average loss in Alberta was 40 per cent. Across the country, the national average overwintering loss was 50 per cent,” says Phillips.
“Beekeepers have told me that with a 30 per cent loss you need three perfect years to recover fully, but there’s never three perfect years in a row,” she adds.
Decades ago, Alberta beekeepers could easily replace lost bees with imports from the United States, but in 1987 the border was closed because of the presence of pests and concerns over disease.
That changed a bit in 2003, when the Canadian Food Inspection Agency performed an import risk analysis and the following year deemed it safe to import individual hand-picked queen bees from the U.S.
