If you were to ask me about my favorite fish dish, I would recall the spicy fish stew, or maeuntang, that I used to enjoy with my uncle at fishing spots during my childhood. However, the fish from those memories may now be leaving our side. This isn't a sentimental reflection on the past; it's an analysis of the stark reality that a massive, invisible tectonic plate is shifting right under our dinner tables. Changes in food resources due to climate change are no longer a distant warning in scientific reports but a developing crisis playing out on our plates every day.

As a child, I was fascinated by the process of replacing a broken part to bring a whole computer back to life. It was then that I first realized the world is a 'system,' connected like a giant organism. Just as one small variable can determine the fate of an entire system, the single key variable of global temperature is shaking the massive system of human food security to its core. Today, we will face the data from this great marine upheaval, investigate what will disappear and what will remain, and uncover the essence of the cascading conflicts this change will trigger.

“The Ocean’s Scream, Written in Numbers: A 1.35°C Warning”

We often dismiss a change of ‘one degree’ as trivial. However, from a systems engineering perspective, a one-degree shift is like a critical error code that corrupts every algorithm. According to a report by the National Institute of Fisheries Science, the surface water temperature of Korea's coastal seas has risen by approximately 1.35°C over the last 54 years (1968-2022). This is a shocking figure, 2.5 times the global average increase of 0.52°C during the same period. This number isn't just a sentimental expression that the sea has gotten a bit warmer; it is data signifying that the massive operating system of the Korean peninsula's marine ecosystem is being forcefully rebooted under an entirely new environment.

Pollack, once a symbol of the East Sea and a "national fish," is the most tragic victim of this system change. Preferring cold water, it could not withstand the boiling East Sea and has virtually vanished. The annual catch, which exceeded 100,000 tons in the 1980s, has now plummeted to a level where statistics are meaningless. For a time, it seemed squid would fill that void. However, the rising temperatures are pushing even the squid further north, beyond the reach of our fishing fleets. This is the objective reality we face and the factual starting point for all further analysis.

In every rapid system change, there are winners and losers. The same is true in this great ecological reorganization. As the 'losers'—pollack and squid—depart, new 'winners' are moving in. At first glance, this might seem like a positive development, with new fish resources replacing depleted ones. But from the perspective of overall system stability, this could be another danger signal.

Is the arrival of large predators like bluefin tuna truly a blessing? This is akin to installing powerful but unpredictable code on a stable server. They prey indiscriminately on smaller and medium-sized species like anchovies and squid, which form the backbone of the existing ecosystem, shaking the food web to its foundations. What's happening is that one crisis is being replaced by another, unpredictable one. While it might bring short-term income gains for fishers, from the broader ecosystem perspective, it is a highly unstable change that could lead to long-term resource depletion and system collapse. We must be able to read the chain reactions happening beneath the surface, not just the single dimension of the phenomenon.

“Fish Without Borders, Humans Drawing Lines: The Prelude to a New Conflict”

A more serious and fundamental problem exists on another level: the artificial system of 'borders.' We draw lines called Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) and manage resources by setting fishing quotas for each nation. But we must remember that fish do not carry passports. To them, borders are meaningless illusions. As changes in food resources due to climate change accelerate, fish are freely crossing these illusions in their struggle for survival.

The phenomenon of East Sea squid moving into North Korean and Russian waters, while yellowtail from the Japanese coast enter our seas, is rendering the old system of all international fishing agreements and regulations obsolete. A nation whose economy once depended on a specific species faces the risk of its foundation collapsing overnight, while another nation will engage in fierce disputes over unexpected resources. This means the issue transcends simple ecology; these changes in food resources due to climate change could become the flashpoint for serious diplomatic and economic conflicts between nations over resources—in other words, 'fish wars.'

In my past experience designing systems from scratch in a new business team, the most crucial element was a flexible response framework for unpredictable variables. This is precisely the approach we need now. It is imperative to face the changing reality, discard outdated rules, and initiate international cooperation and discussion to build a new, data-driven resource management system fit for our new reality.

It's Time to Redesign the System for the Future

In conclusion, changes in food resources due to climate change represent a massive systemic crisis that threatens the very foundation of our survival. The ocean does not speak. It simply adapts or quietly vanishes. The choice now rests entirely with us. Will we accept a future where pollack stew and squid on our holiday tables become relics of the past, or will we start redesigning this system right now?
