The University of Southern Philippines (USeP) Tagum Mabini Campus Mabini Unit is embarking on a meaningful collaboration with La Union-based Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University’s (DMMMSU) National Apiculture Research, Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) to foster sustainable apiculture (beekeeping) research.

Dr. Larry V. Aceres and Ms. Cristy F. Owanes, project-in-charge of the University’s Apiary Project from the USeP’s Entomology team, led the ceremonial turnover of additional apicultural stock (queens and brood bees) from DMMMSU-NARTDI.

During the visit, they also observed the process of replacing the queen bees at USeP Beekeeping, which is part of the routine colony management that reflects the state of honeybee product development.

The assessment projected a promising amount of propolis, which indicates the healthy productivity of the beehives.

To ensure enhanced, sustainable beekeeping practices, USeP will follow the insights from the assessment led by the DMMMSU-NARTDI delegation as they share significant data points on effective hive optimization.

Representatives from DMMMSU-NARTDI who graced the event included Mr. David T. De Castro, Division Chief for Innovation and Technology Commercialization, along with Mr. Mac Donald C. Acosta, Head of the Apiary Demonstration.

Mr. De Castro pointed out the opportunity to invest in the development of honeybee products and utilize the materials they already have.

“Kung ano yung nandito sa inyo, ‘yun yung i-develop niyo,” said De Castro said

A formal welcome was extended to them by Dr. Shirley S. Villanueva, Chancellor of USeP Tagum-Mabini Campus; Dr. Cecirly G. Puig, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Related Sciences (CARS); and Dr. Larry V. Aceres, Associate Dean.

Dr. Jerald Antony C. Esteban, the College Research Head, emphasized that the project goes beyond academic walls as it drives societal development.

“This collaboration is more than just the sharing of knowledge; it is a commitment to sustainable innovation, environmental responsibility, and regional development,” Dr. Esteban said.

The event strengthened the relationship and teamwork between the two institutions in promoting beekeeping efforts and turned it into an economically viable output. (PIA/IRL)
