AriensCo's thriving bee program fuels conservation and funds future prairie projects
"It takes years to develop some of the plants, to get them growing and blossoming, and the bees are part of that. They pollinate the plants and enable seed to grow," saidCraig Scharbarth, a conservation worker.
Staff members planted the first prairie back in 2014.
"Calumet County is a very agricultural county, so this is restoring some of that habitat. A lot of this was previously farm land, and we are just converting it back to, or maintaining, what was here previously," said conservation consultant Ann Stilp.
The reason why this prairie is thriving the way it is is thanks to our natural pollinators.

"They needed bees to pollinate the prairie plants, and it evolved from there, so now we have been doing bees for 11 years," said Scharbarth.
Currently, AriensCo has six hives. That's 60,000 bees.
"Two boxes makes a five-gallon pail, so it's 60 pounds, 60 pounds, 120 pounds," said Scharbarth while showing FOX 11 the beehives.
The bees produce more honey than their hives can handle.
"They keep the prairie going and pollinate the plants, and then they make more honey than they need, so we take some of the honey away, because they hoard so much that the hive would get full and they would actually hoard themselves out of room, so then they would get disgusted by the whole situation and move, and you would loose your bees. So you have to take some of the honey away. That's part of it," Scharbarth said.
"Ariens has been selling the honey since 2015. It started out just among employee sales, and then it grew to the point where we were selling it at the Ariens Museum," Stilp said.
All the proceeds are put right back into future conservation efforts.
"What we are ultimately trying to create here is a prairie oak savanna. So that is a unique habitat that used to cover five million acres in Wisconsin and now covers 1%," Stilp said. "Whereas a forest has a lot of tree cover and a prairie has no tree cover. An oak savannah has a combination of that."

With over 400 species spotted on their land, the diverse prairies show the bees are thriving.
