A Massive Ecological Disaster Unfolds Beneath the Surface

A massive layer of sea snot also known as marine mucilage has covered large parts of Turkeys Marmara Sea
The substance first appeared last year but has grown significantly driven by rising ocean temperatures and nutrient pollution

Marine mucilage is produced when phytoplankton multiply abnormally and release excessive organic matter
It is not inherently toxic but becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses
When this mucilage blankets the water surface it blocks sunlight and restricts oxygen flow
This suffocates marine life and leads to mass die offs of fish and other organisms

This phenomenon is now spreading from the Marmara Sea into the northern Aegean and the Black Sea
In coastal towns thousands of dead fish have been found washed ashore
According to Turkish marine experts this could be the most severe ecological crisis in the regions recent history

The Turkish Environment Ministry has launched an emergency response team to remove the mucilage and reduce pollution sources
Plans are underway to designate the Marmara Sea as a protected environmental zone
However many experts say the measures are too late and the ocean may take years to recover

Meanwhile scientists are voicing growing concern about the Black Sea
Due to limited water exchange and high levels of industrial and agricultural runoff conditions are worsening
Researchers warn that large parts of the Black Sea now experience hypoxic or low oxygen conditions especially in deeper layers

If the trend continues the region could see a sharp drop in biodiversity
The Black Sea basins unique structure prevents the effective mixing of surface and deep waters
Layered salinity and temperature differences keep oxygen from reaching lower depths

A recent study from the University of Liege shows that oxygenated habitat zones in the Black Sea have decreased by over 40 percent in the last 60 years
Only the upper 90 meters now support significant marine life
This decline represents a dramatic contraction of the viable ecosystem

The Mediterranean also is not immune
The Calypso Deep once considered a pristine trench has been found to contain vast quantities of human waste including plastic metal and glass
Deep sea organisms are especially vulnerable to such contamination due to their slow reproduction and isolated living conditions

As sea temperatures rise and waste continues to spread scientists emphasize the urgent need for global action
Pollution in the ocean does not disappear it accumulates
