Climate index predicts 100-degree shade heat in Southeast

Climate Central uses weather conditions upstream from a region, atmospheric dynamics over the region and forecast models, to name a few.

These are used to create the ongoing Climate Shift Index to predict the likelihood or unlikelihood of changes in the upcoming weather.

The CSI indicates the number of times the change would be. For the last Monday of the month of May, there is five times more likely that the current trend of the temperatures will be above normal. This covers at least 90 precent of the southeast region. While a very large area of the region has an CSI likely trend, the vast majority of the Carolinas is not within the parameters of the climate shift prediction.

That changes for the Carolinas on Tuesday, especially for South Carolina, which over 80 precent will have a likely change for that morning.

Most of the lower and mid Mississippi Valley into the Tennessee Valley are dropped from the CSI notification, the warmer mornings from Monday will still be apparent by the afternoon, and will continue through Tuesday afternoon.

With the region's mornings be abnormally warm either for Monday, Tuesday, or both, the afternoons will be much warmer that the late Spring season's temperatures.

Afternoon air temperatures could be 7 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit above the average. Another abnormal warming trend, similar to the on that occurred less than three to five days ago.

It's also going to be very humid in that 2 day timeframe. Heat index values could be four to six degrees above the maximum air temperature, making it feel closer to 100 degrees, and that's in the shade.

But as hot and humid as it's going to be, don't bank on rainfall to cool things off. There's not a lot of chances for precipitation on those two days.
