December, strong Arctic wave. But also the risk of a high-pressure weather system

First of all, the Anticyclone, that structure that in recent years has become increasingly invasive, dispensing sun, mild climate, abnormal heat, persistent drought.

And then, just to make sure we don’t miss anything, that extremely deleterious energy surplus when dealing with bad weather.   But to be able to comment on fully winter weather conditions, there is a need for High Pressure.

Yes, for a High Pressure in a favorable position and especially prone to pushing north.

For this to happen, complex atmospheric dynamics must occur, which can be deduced from a careful analysis of the most important climatic patterns and particularly from the analysis of the health of the Polar Vortex.   Beyond the technicalities, a favorable positioning could be the one we are about to comment on, namely a High Pressure positioned over Western Europe and from there ready to push north-northwest or north-northeast. In the first case, space for the Arctic or maritime polar currents, in the second still Arctic but sometimes also continental cold.   And this is what could happen around the Immaculate Conception, a period that this year seems to be extremely interesting not only because it will officially open the Christmas holiday season but because it could bring us “white surprises.”   Here, this is the so-called synoptic that could facilitate the descent of cold into the Mediterranean.

All according to plan? Calm down… If something were to go wrong, we would find the Anticyclone above our heads.

It wouldn’t be the first time; often we comment on model projections with “apocalyptic” scenarios only to end up with nothing.   For this and other reasons, we cannot rule out any hypothesis, not even the anticyclonic one, although at the moment it seems the least likely.

But given its proximity to our country, we must be careful; it would take very little to find ourselves once again under the protective wing of High Pressure.   At that point, good weather, at that point mild daytime climate, at that point fog and lack of precipitation, and who knows for how long.

Because we know, when that type of structure chooses the Mediterranean, it doesn’t go away easily.

So we must hope that this does not happen.
