Axarquía’s honey lovers: Buy local!
Axarquía’s honey lovers: Buy local!
This Christmas, Axarquía’s beekeepers are urging you to support local honey producers and help protect a cherished tradition under threat from an influx of imported counterfeit honey.
For all honey lovers out there, Axarquía is calling on you to buy local versions of the sweet delight this Christmas, as beekeepers warn against massive imports of fake honey being sold. Honey production in the villages of Axarquia such as in Colmenar of Frigiliana, is a traditional economic sector which has local and national renown due to the professionalism of its beekeepers. Across the region, there are several zones where honey is produced and plays an important role in the local economy.
In the face of massive importation of honey from abroad, Head of Farmers and Livestock Organizations (COAG), Pedro Loscertales, has launched measures aimed at defending this native, natural product.
Spain’s beekeepers urge government to take action against honey fraud
The COAG beekeeping sector in Spain has created a movement alongside France and Portugal to fight against widespread fraud in the production and sale of honey, which represents 46 per cent of honey sold in the EU and a shameful 51 per cent in Spain. It highlights imported syrups and honey substitutes that line our supermarket shelves at cheaper rates, of which over half may be fraudulent. COAG urges the EU and Spanish government to reinforce food controls.
Buy from beekeepers for guarantee of honey quality and authenticity
COAG sends a clear message to consumers for these Christmas dates. “Buying directly from beekeepers, or through local marketing channels is the best guarantee of honey authenticity and quality.”
Buy local honey from Axarquía and guarantee a future for Spain’s bees and beekeepers!
