Veteran says beekeeping helps PTSD

For Veterans Day, we took a moment to celebrate and honor the courageous men and women who have served our country, recognizing the sacrifices they’ve made in defense of our freedoms.

This week’s edition of the Ag Journal takes a closer look at how one veteran is finding healing and purpose through an unexpected connection—beekeeping.

Gary Watts is a man of many roles; he is an avid beekeeper, being president of the Caprock Beekeeping Association. He brings a wealth of experience and discipline to everything he does. In addition to his military background, he plays a key role in promoting sustainable beekeeping practices and supporting local apiculture efforts.

He is also an active member of T6 Canine Training, a specialized group focused on training working dogs for various purposes, including search and rescue, protection, and service. His involvement in T6 allows him to merge his passion for animals with his commitment to service, ensuring that dogs are well-prepared for the important tasks they undertake.

Through T6, there is a program where they train Veterans the skills of beekeeping and grant them their own hives when they feel they are trained enough. Watts says the simple actions of beekeeping and the frequency of the buzzing helps to soothe and give small tasks that provide several subconscious healing methods.

For Veteran’s Day, Gary had the opportunity to deepen his connection with T6 Canine Training and Texas Tech University. He was able to inform students and viewers of the correlation between T6 and Texas Tech’s new dog training.

In all of these endeavors, Gary Watts exemplifies dedication, leadership, and a commitment to service, working tirelessly to improve his community and the lives of those he touches, whether through beekeeping, canine training, or his role as a veteran.

Watch the video above to learn just how beekeeping, canine training and dedication have given meaning to Watts.
