Sacramento’s top dog: Meet Biscuit, voted the cutest dog in The Bee’s competition

After more than 150 submissions and thousands of votes, there could only be one top dog in The Sacramento Bee’s cutest dog competition. Biscuit, an 8-year-old miniature pinscher mix from Carmichael, fetched the victory in the contest, receiving 5,587 votes in the final round, or 47%. His three final opponents — Gunner, Charlie and Martin — received 3,872, 1,282 and 1,059 votes, respectively. Biscuit came to his family as a rescue in November 2019, after friends of friends found him in a vineyard on the side of the road, said his owner Linda Henry. The family had lost their previous rescue dog that July and decided to see if Biscuit was a good fit for their family. “He’s been with us ever since, and he’s such a sweetheart,” Henry said. Henry teaches out of her home working with children who have dyslexia, and Biscuit is her “mascot,” she said. He greets all the kids who come in and helps them feel comfortable, even learning tricks from one student. While Biscuit loves everyone in the family, Henry said he’s especially attached to her, running to the door when he hears her come home. Henry said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April and underwent surgery in June. Through treatment, Biscuit has always been there to comfort her. “Biscuit was just always by my side,” she said. “My surgery was a pretty big surgery, and for about a good month, I was pretty much couch ridden, bed ridden, and he was right there. It was pretty amazing.” Biscuit, the winner of The Sacramento Bee’s cutest dog competition, and his owner Linda Henry are pictured here at Wright’s Beach in Sonoma County. Henry said the theme of food in the pets’ names comes from her son, who named them. Biscuit is much more interested in Oreo than Oreo is in Biscuit, Henry said. “They have a mutually respectful relationship,” Henry said. “It’s kind of like Garfield and Odie.” Biscuit is still learning how to play fetch, Henry said, and he’s learned how to play with toys since being rescued. When he goes on walks to the beach or to the dog park, Biscuit is ready to make friends with everybody, from people to even the biggest dog on the playground.
